Homeless Feeding

About: We have been preparing hot lunches/breakfast for the homeless since 1995. We have two different programs – 1. Breakfast Seva 2. Lunch Seva.

1. Breakfast Seva

We do this on the third Saturday of every month. Adult members as well as teenagers in the Yuva Kendra classes have been volunteering for this program. We cook and serve a vegetarian meal for homeless people staying in the shelter. This shelter housessingle people. We usually serve about 120-150 people (winter) and about 60-80 people (summer). This is a great way to give back to the community and is much appreciated by the staff running the shelter.

We now need 12 adults to be outside the kitchen in the dining area during the breakfast service.

We realize that it not useful to have a lot of people waiting around for the food serving to begin. We have split up the volunteer signups into two slots:
1) 5am to 6:15 for breakfast preparation (need 12 people)
2) 6:15 to 7:30am for breakfast serving (need 18 people). Please sign up using the link below. It helps us ensure that we have the right number of sevaks (volunteers).

Update(2016) – The shelter rules only allow adults to be working in the Kitchen at all times. It is a safety concern that the new Chief Chef is a stickler for. Thank you for your understanding.

Menu: Over the years we have developed a vegetarian menu that we know is popular. It consists of

  • oatmeal
  • pancakes
  • potatoes
  • bean casserole
  • fruits, milk, juice, bread & bagels
